Ah, it’s been an exciting journey and you’ve also been a wonderful class. Thanks for always being here. And today, we bring this series to a pause – The seed, the sower and the soil. Father we thank you for this powerful message that has changed our life. Thank you Lord In Jesus Name. But you can catch the rest and access all teachings online or in the new book – The Seed, The Sower and The Soil.
So this class is titled: Your Family First!
In Gen 37:14, Jacob sent Joseph his son on a mission of destiny
14And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem –
Joseph started out his ministry in Gen chapter 37 verse 4, as a teenager, when Jacob his father sent him to look out for his brethren. He tried finding and ‘saving’ 10 men, before helping the butler – being a seed to him. That landed him before Pharaoh – solving his riddle. Thereafter, he saved a whole nation – Israel.
Just look at that trend. Joseph started by looking out for his own people, his family, before other people. It’s not selfishness, it’s the way God works.
Your family first, then other people
David started out his own ministry when Jesse his father sent him to the war camp to check on his brothers.
17Take this basket of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread, and carry them quickly to your brothers.
18And give these ten cuts of cheese to their captain. See how your brothers are getting along, and bring back a report on how they are doing. 1 Sam 17:17-18
David was sent out to serve his brothers in the war camp – to do ‘ministry’. That was his mission – to save his own brothers (by serving them food)..
Then he caught God’s bigger picture!
A nation in trouble, at the mercy of just one man – the giant of Gath – a soldier from his youth
Israel stood the risk of another long period of slavery if they fail to produce a man to face this giant and kill him. That was Goliath’s proposal in 1 Sam 17:9-11
And then David ran over and pulled Goliath’s sword from its sheath and used it to kill him and cut off his head – 1 Sam 17:51 (NLT)
So even though David killed Goliath and saved the nation, yet his first mission was not to save Israel. His first mission was to save his brothers, his family. You want to change the world? O yes you will, but start with your family. Change your family first!
Your family first, then other people!
Family is the most fundamental unit of ministry. It forms the saints who in turn form the church and the nation. I think our first duty is to our family. If you don’t sow seeds into your family members and you start from the church, then you need to repent today and start from your family. A lot us too often, neglect our family members. We say things like: “they’ll understand. My wife and children know that I’m a very busy person”. We deprive them of quality time, love, attention and intimacy. We substitute family time for business sessions, ministry and so on, forgetting that your family is your first ministry; your family is your first business.
When you sow quality time, quality seed, financial resources, prayer and waiting into your family members, you’re doing yourself a favour. If you don’t, you cheat yourself.
For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church? 1 Tim 3:5
Now, don’t get me wrong. It’s good to bless the brethren, but your family members are your first ‘brethren’. We should not be ‘good’ men at work or in church and be otherwise at home. Whatever grace we carry must impart our families first. Somehow, we just have to realize that that “labour of love” and “ministration to the saints” in Heb 6:10 actually includes our family members. 1 Tim 3:5 shows us that it begins with them.
The mother of Jesus was one of Jesus’ first disciples, if not the first. How do I know? At Jesus’s first public outing – the wedding at Cana of Galilee – she was mentioned before any disciple, right in verse 1 of John 2. She was an integral part of Jesus earthly ministry. I don’t think it just happened because she was his mother. Jesus had discipled her before discipling the other disciples.
If you disciple your family first by sowing into them your labour of love, then discipling other people will be easy for you.
In John 19:26-27
26When Jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said unto his mother, woman, behold thy son!
27Then saith he unto the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own house. –
He was dying on the cross as an execution of his ultimate assignment, but he still cherished his mother. He saw her spiritual and emotional well-being as key to the continuation and expansion of the ministry he was leaving behind. He gave her a source of emotional succor. An earthly replacement of him – son, since he cannot be replaced – Son of God
Your family first, then other people!
We’re not done yet; let me show you another example. It’s that of Gideon. Midian has gone haywire. Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and she had become defenseless because God had delivered her into the hands of Midian for 7 solid years! They dealt with Israel. And it was not just Midian; it was a league of enemies – The Midian, the Amalekites and the children of the East – three nations against one.
Judges 6:3, 4 & 6 says
3And it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites
4And the children of the east, even they encamped against them and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no substance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass…..
6And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord. –
….But God soon sent a savior – Gideon, son of Joash the Abiezrite (Judges 6:14)
His mission is simple – save Israel from the hands of the Midianites.
Just like Joseph’s mission in Gen 45:7
And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance Gen 45:7
And David’s own mission too in 1 Sam 17:46
That all the earth may know that there’s a God in Israel – 1 Sam 17:46
But not only was Gideon’s salvation mission given by God, his strategy was given also, and it’s simple too. Same as Joseph’s and David’s:
Save your family first, then other people!
In Judges 6:25-26, Gideon’s strategy was given to him by God. The strategy was simple. Go to your father’s house – your family throw down the altar of Baal and
Build an Altar unto the Lord
In your father’s house, your family house
In other words, dethrone the devil and enthrone the Lord – in your father’s house, in your family. Start that mission of saving Israel by saving your family first. The family is so significant. Please take care of your family. Your husband, your wife, children, siblings, parents. Delight them and lead them always to Jesus.
Say Lord Jesus, I thank you for this teaching series. From today, I will take care of my family. And the harvest will be for all all, in Jesus Name. Amen.
But there’s a big family of Christ, waiting for you to join them, that’s if you don’t yet have a relationship with Jesus. Please join us today. Say Lord Jesus, I thank you for this invitation. I come to you today and I’m sorry for my sins. I forsake them and receive your forgiveness. I accept you as my Lord and Saviour. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus Name. Amen.
