IT’s MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE | Acts 20:35 | My Jesus Today – Lesson 18 | David Adeniji
A reservoir keeps water it doesn’t need. It soon begins to stink on the inside. You can’t wash the inside, because water stays in it for too long. Don’t be like that, refresh your spirit with the word, but spread out God’s grace. Intentionally look for avenues to be a blessing, and be that blessing!
Apostle Paul in Acts 20:35 reminds us of how his hands ministered to the needs of both himself and those that were with him. He then reminds us again of one of Jesus teaching. IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE.
Unfortunately, we seem to be living in a ‘give me’ generation. Everyone wants an entitlement. I find it hard to share my plans with so many friends and people who claim to be associated with me because the moment it looks like they have a role to play in it’s actualization, they immediately begin to look up to you as though you owe them an entitlement. Honestly, it’s annoying. Even when the endeavor is not yet obviously a business or any income generating exercise. Sometimes I ask myself – Don’t they get it? Don’t they understand that you only multiply by giving and not necessarily by receiving.
I maintain that we have very few ‘liberal’ givers today, even in church or among the Christian folds. Everyone loves to go when it’s easy and convenient. Most people want to be a reservoir, they want more – more blessings, more breakthrough, more money.
However, I have an advice for leaders too. Please articulate your vision well enough for people to identify exactly where you’re headed, and how they are needed, so they don’t become jack of all trades while trying you give what they have and give themselves into your course. If the vision is not well planned and the mission is not well spelt out, followers get confused and all in a bid to obey the ‘more better to give than to receive’ command, they choose the wrong place to sow and may even lose their harvest.
Many leaders get the vision, and are too lazy to sit with it long enough until at least they are able to split it into actionable pieces with definite deliverables and KPI’s and as a result, resources (human, material and time) are deployed more than necessary, only to achieve unsatisfactory output. In Luke 10:1-20, study how our Lord Jesus, actionized the evangelism task into executable tasks and instructions to be easily carried out by the disciples. And they got results. You will always get results too, in Jesus Name.
