Part 5 – ARE YOU COMPASSIONATE ? | 1 Pet 3:9 | The Lord Of The Harvest – Lesson 17 | David ADENIJI

Yesterday, we saw compassion in a different way. 1 Pet 3:8 opened up a New horizon. Now, let’s proceed to verse 9 in NIV

“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”

Now, all these are part of Apostle Peter’s teaching, in trying in explain compassion, which he mentioned in verse 8.

Compassion holds your actions and checks them to be sure they’re in conformity with God’s love. Jesus told us in Luke chapter 6 verses 26-29 to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us. It’s a command and not an advice. Yet these days, you find so many versions of this command.

Some will say you can only love an enemy that is ready to repent. Some even argue that even Jesus Christ commanded in Luke 19:27 that his enemies should be brought and killed before him. They forget that He wasn’t talking about this world in that parable, he was talking about the Kingdom of Heaven, and and the final fate in judgement of those who rejected him on Earth.

So, 1 Pet 3:9 is clear. If you have imbibed the compassion message preached about in verse 8, then you won’t have the inner defiance to repay evil for evil. And this could even be in thoughts and in words.

Compassion shuts your mouth against replying harsh words with harsh words. Your words must be gentle at all times. Strife begins in the heart and is set to motion with words. People’s harsh words are not licences for you to disobey God’s word. It takes the holy Spirit whose love is already shed abroad in your heart.

Finally, there’s an action point and I believe that’s where the power to obey lie. 1 Pet 3:9b 👉 “On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” Can you imagine. Bless, don’t curse, whatever the circumstance.
