YOUR BAG OF POWER | 1 Sam 17:39-40 | LESSON 32 | DAVID ADENIJI

Home / YOUR BAG OF POWER | 1 Sam 17:39-40 | LESSON 32 | DAVID ADENIJI

The Shepherd’s bag refers to that small bag that Shepherd’s carry on them and it could probably contain food items, equipment, and in David’s case in 1 Sam 17;40, that Shepherd’s bag contained stones to kill Goliath.

Usually, a Shepherd’s bag contains things for hunting, protecting your flock, and also providing for yourself,

In the circumstance we’re considering, which is at 1 Sam 17:30, we’re looking at the Shepherd’s bag into which David put the 5 stones he picked at the Brook.

Many thanks for joining the class once again. Our subseries is titled weapons at the river. This class is titled, your bag of power.

Interestingly, the same word translated as bag in 1 Sam 17:40 is also translated as 5 or 6 other beautiful things in other portions of scriptures. The word translated as bag is also translated as jewels, weapons, vessels, instruments, armour, and even armour bearer.

Now, let’s recap a bit and refresh our memories of what the Shepherd’s bag is, as we explained it in the last class. That Shepherd’s bag could be seen as our own repository of God’s Revelations that come handy when we are faced with situations that demand spiritual action and power. So, we have to consciously make word deposits, just like saving money in the bank, for later days, like ‘saving for rainy days’.

You have to consciously make word deposits into that repository. Notice that this is exactly what we’re doing as we study this. Everytime you study the word purposely, listen to sermons purposely, and extract Revelations minister to you, everytime you hear a word from God and keep it, everytime you hear a testimony and personalized it, and say, Lord You’re awesome, you did this, you can do it in my life. Every Time you do this, you’re making deposits into your Shepherd’s bag.

You cannot give what you don’t have, and so if you think there’s no problem now,and you just go, gallivanting around without the consciousness of God’s presence, if you take a break from your Bible, and say there’s no trouble for now, you put yourself at risk. May you not be weak in the day of adversity.

Psalm 20 says, the Lord heard thee in the days of trouble, the name of the God of Jacob defend thee. Send thee help from His sanctuary and strengthen you out of Zion.

That is what happens when you make deposits into your spiritual repository. God will always help you, but don’t wait until there’s trouble, or until there’s a pressing need before you start searching the scripture for that word that will fit your situation. Why not make it a lifestyle, creating that repository, making deposits into your own Shepherd’s bag. Your bag of power.

Is it a physical bag? We could liken it to a bag where you keep your Bible, jotter, etc. But really, you are that bag. YOU ARE THAT BAG OF POWER.

Your spirit man must be kept alive. You’re not permitted to take a break from God or His word. You’re not permitted to take a break from reading the Bible or hearing from God. You cannot take a break from breaking Revelations in the scriptures. Bible says,

2 Corinthians 3:18
[18]But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

You’re not permitted to take a break from God. When you take a break, there’d be nothing in your repository. So, you must consciously make a word and encounter deposits into your Shepherd’s bag. You can only deliver what you have, when it’s needed.

Today, we see interestingly that the word translated as bag in 1 Sam 17:40 is also translated as jewels, weapons, vessels, instruments, armour and even armour bearer in other parts of scriptures.

Our topic for today is YOUR BAG OF POWER.

I’m saying you’re the bag because it’s in you. Don’t begin to say, well, I’m not a pastor, so I don’t need that Shepherd’s bag. In this situation, you’re the bag. You’re the repository. You’re depositing God’s word into yourself, strengthening yourself, for when you’ll need it. It may not always be that you’ll be in trouble, it could be someone else who needs an urgent manifestation. God will always manitest at the instance of his word.

So, let’s go over them one after the other.

1. JEWELS – Gen 24:53

If you check the strong’s concordance, you’ll see That the word translated as bag in 1 Sam 17:40 is also translated as JEWEL in Gen 24:53

Genesis 24:52
[52]And it came to pass that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.

Talking about Abraham’s servant here.

The next thing he did was to bring out Jewels of silver, gold and clothing and gave them to Rebekah and her brother, and also her mother.

Genesis 24:53
[53]And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he also gave to her brother and to her mother precious things.

So, the same word translated as bag is also translated as Jewels. It tells you how precious this is. So, are you loading your bag of power? 1 Sam 17:40 calls it the shepherd’s bag, but we’re seeing it as your bag of power.

2. WEAPON – Gen 27:3

You know we’ve been talking about weapons at the river. In Gen 27:3

Genesis 27:3
[3]Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;

This is Isaac talking to Esau. It again tells you how precious this Shepherd’s bag is. Your bag of power. You are the bag of power. You must be conscious of that. What are the contents of this bag? The word of God, rhema, by staying with the word and internalizing it. Consciously, purposely and intentionally. Every word you hear stores in you. Please do not leave yourself unguarded or vulnerable. You leave yourself vulnerable when you’re not consciously making deposits into that bag of power, which is you.

This is Isaac telling Esau to take his weapon. It means that bag of power, that Shepherd’s bag serves for you, as a weapon. Remember it’s this same weapon he used to kill an animal for Isaac to eat. He was supplanted by his brother at first, but he later got powerful.

3. VESSELS – Exodus 40:9-10

Exodus 40:9-10
[9]And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.

This Shepherd’s bag, makes in you a Holy vessel..When you consciously make word deposits into this bag of power. You know Bible says you shall receive power, after the Holy Ghost comes upon you in Acts 1:8

It means, you are the bag of power. When the power enters you, you become the carrier of that power. You are the bag of power. Hallelujah. So this bag of power makes you a vessel. Please don’t leave yourself lying fallow, not consciously making deposits into that vessel of yours. Deposits like rhema that you get from God’s word, personal revelations testimonies that you have personalized. It could even be other people’s testimonies. When you invoke these, it comes naturally and spontaneously, the right words to speak, come out of your spirit. Hallelujah!

When you check the strong’s concordance, that root word translated ‘bag’ is ‘Keliy’ in the Hebrew and it means all these that we’re listing.

We’ve seen it as weapons, now, let’s see it as vessels.

God’s word is so explicit. Please check out verse 10 also.

[10]And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy.

4. INSTRUMENTS – Gen 49:5

All these refer to what you need to conquer the enemy in the face of challenges. It’s your power. Hallelujah.

Genesis 49:5
[5]Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

5. ARMOUR & ARMOUR-BEARER – 1 Sam 14:1&6 ; 1 Sam 14:7&12

Already, the Bible says put on the whole armour of God. The armour is an instrument of defence.

1 Samuel 14:1,6
[1]Now it came to pass upon a day that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.

[6]And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

What a word!

Father, we thank you. We’re conscious from today of our status as a bag of power. The power of God enters us and we become a carrier of all these things. We become weapons, vessels, instruments, jewels, armours, and we make conscious deposits to become all of these. Father, we thank you. In Jesus name we have prayed. Amen. Hallelujah.

The word of God is strong, but you need to have Jesus in your life to realize all of these. If you’re ready for him, he’s ready to make you a bag of power.

Just say Lord Jesus, I come to you today. I repent of my sins and I forsake them. I accept you as my Lord and savior. Write my name in your book of Life. From today, I become a bag of power, in the name of Jesus . Thank you Lord. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen. – Congratulations, welcome to God’s kingdom.

Let’s meet again in the next class by God’s grace. Amen!
